That program is a great idea, and I'm glad it's around. But this?
Still, what really moved me ... was the recognition of how weak the love of learning is among those for whom the privilege of moving seamlessly from high school into college is taken for granted. Why can we not engender the same motivation and attachment to a life of the mind when there are few real constraints on our students?
Bullshit.
Because unlike those inmates, college costs tens of thousands of dollars for most people. If we could learn just for the sake of learning, without having to pay for it, and with fewer restraints on our time, like families and jobs, many more people might embrace liberal arts. But as long as the cost of college keeps rising the way it has been you're going to continue to see the shift from liberal arts to other majors which have more promise outside of academia for making money. We have to pay back those loans somehow.
